This sink and drain are located in a finished basement. The pipe through the rear of the cabinet is the venting pipe and the one through the bottom is the drain. I thought the vent had to be above the trap? Am I wrong?

It is all wrong. You should not have a vent opening below the trap weir, except on a toilet.

Now I believe a vent through the roof is always preferred but haven't they heard of an AAV? It's like these people know enough to try to vent it but absolutely nothing beyond that.
