View Full Version : Determining Styles, etc . . .

I was wondering if there are any web references to house styles & window styles (I still have no idea of the difference between a bay and a bow). Something simple preferable; you know a name and a photo type deal. There are so many knock-offs of an original style of home. Builders custom build a lot. When I view assessors' sites, a lot of them say "residential" or "standard" or the ever-popular "multi-family". My online report fields only have certain types: cape, colonial, condo, ranch, etc . . . so, I usually just choose 2-story or whatever is closest and let the reviewers hash it out. Thanks in advance. usually a simple google search will get you what you want.... for instance;
I searched "architectural styles" and got a bunch of web pages... like.....

Residential Styles Main Page (http://www.realtor.org/rmoarch.nsf/pages/archguide?OpenDocument)

and on that same page... for windows....

Architecture Guide: Windows (http://www.realtor.org/rmo/architecture_guide/features/windows.html)

as a matter of fact, there are links there to:

arches
collumns
dormers
molding
roofs
windows

Good luck.......

A good text book would be best. I like and use a book called "Modern Carpentry" by Willis Wagner and Howard "Bud" Smith published by Goodheart-Wilcox Company 2003 ISBN#1-59070-202-6. I bought a copy from Barnes & Noble online a few years back for around $60.

It is a great book and will have just about everything you are looking for.

And then there are the exceptions.

It says that it is attached to this post, does not show up on the preview and will not show up when I submit.

Thats funny. I have been to Barcelona and saw that building. If I can find my pics I will post some. Amazing buildings in that city.

Dave:

Please do post those photos. I've been to Europe several times but have yet to make it to Spain. I have long been a fan of Gaudi's fantastic architecture and would love to see it in person.

Thanks,

Aaron;)

Then you must be aware of the great Rosa Motta?

I guess I am wondering why you would want to put a note about an architectural style in a report. Mine are one story, two story and three story. Nothing else. I don't want to get into an argument about whether this is a bungalow, cottage or shingle style. Don't care. Is the wiring any good? That's what I want to know.

David;
I was stumped there, for a while, even though the name sounded familiar. So, I did a google search and found Rosa Mota, the marathon runner. Now I know why it sounded familiar.
An interesting side note:
While googling Rosa Motta, This thread came up on the third page......

Victor:

I looked at lots of photos online of Tomar. Great place. A question I have to ask, and I ask this of everyone I meet who is originally from Europe: what the hell possessed you to move over here when you were surrounded by all of that beauty and culture there?

Seems like a demotion to me . . .

I was running Marathons and lived in Boulder Colorado when she was huge. I used to see her and some elite runners pass me on my training runs. I was a big fan of hers.

Gunnar,

Exactly what I was also wondering, and I did the same thing as you: "one story, two story and three story. Nothing else."

Ranch?

Great, how many acres? Horse ranch or cattle ranch? :confused:

Aaron;
I have some wonderful memories of the place. My Grandmothers farm was on the hillside adjacent to the castle. As a child, I ran through the halls and along the parapets. I also remember the unpaved streets in the outskirts where our favorite hobby was kicking "donkey apples".
Up the hill from where we lived was the bull ring which I went to every weekend during the season. My dad played trombone in the band and one of my uncles was a bull handler.
Lots of fond memories, but, there were also reasons to leave. At the time, circa 1959, the country was under a very repressive dictatorship. Economic and educational advantages/opportunities were the primary reason that my parents decided to emigrate. I had no choice in the matter due to my age (9 yo)
Culture shock would be an understatement when we landed in Newark, NJ. in 1961

Aaron;

I re-read your post and was caught by surprise when I read the part about "seems like a demotion" (I know you meant culturally etc.)
We arrived in and became citizens of this, the greatest Nation on the face of the planet. Our adopted home.
Just last summer, my mother, now 76 years old, went to visit some friends in Portugal for 3 weeks.
Apparently there are some misguided people over there that fall into the propaganda trap and believe, when they are told, that the U.S. is evil.
My mom promptly ripped them a new one, and came back home 3 days into her 3 week vacation.
We love this country, it has given us everything that we are. And I know that it was an UpGrade Economically, educationally, Socially, and any other superlative word that you can find.

As for beauty, I have traveled most of the States and beauty is abundant in this land graced by God.

But, You're right it's beautiful there also.
Culture is a strange thing.... it doesn't matter much when you're economically deprived.
