OK, what again are these 4x4 triangular supports called that you find on older homes out supporting the rake-end eave rafters?

Bracket

I call them corbels.

I call them a maintenance problem if they don't cover the exposed top with some galvanized sheetmetal. (roof eve-end support bracket)

Interesting comment Jerry about the galvanized caps.
Several of these were not painted on the top side and were rotting.
My client asked whether it would be smart to just cap them with some metal....

Isn't the horizontal portion an extension of a purlin? That would make the 45 degree piece a
bracket, brace or purlin support.

No, I would not call it a purlin. A purlin needs a cross member and provides support for a rafter(s) or wall. That is just a brace or bracket.

Scott,

On second look, I think you are right. I thought the horizontal penetrated the wall, but it looks like it is surface mounted. I would like to change my vote to "Bracket" please.

I'd call it a 'gusset-type support bracket' on the (insert location here) corner rake edge.

I call them "Lookouts" or "Lookout Brackets" Might not be exactly right - lookouts might be just on the gable end, but that's what I call them.
