When it comes to residiential building code, is the IRC nationaly recognized? Is it the starting off point to say a state or county code?

Hello All

I am a new member, and about 6 months ago became ICC Certified as a Residential Building Inspector.
My questions to my fellow inspectors is: Where does this ICC Certification rate, as far as qualifications. Is it considered going above and beyond the norm?
Also, When it comes to residiential building code, is the IRC nationally recognized? Is it the starting off point to say a state or county code? .

The ICC certs can't hurt you, but they are a long way from the education that you need to be a home inspector. The codes are used primarily for new constriction, with some exceptions. As a home inspector, you need to know so much more than the codes.

Now if you are working for a municipality in their code enforcement and permit department then the code certs will be of a greater benefit. In Florida you have the Florida Building Code. The IRC is not used nationwide, but it is the most recognized.

Yes the IRC is not only nationally recognized but it is internationally well respected. Here in Florida these exams are used by the county to assess their inspectors, so currently you are on par with a residential building inspector.

Home inspectors inspect more then just the structural issues outlined in the IRC Building Section, I believe that if you press on and complete the battery of residential ICC exams (E1, M1, P1) and obtain an R-5 certificate you will be well on your way to to being able to distinguish construction defects across all divisions of home construction.
