    Any of the foregoing.

On another item in the photo - the batt insulation ... what are we looking at? Paper or other facing?

The insulation is just dirty fiberglass, no paper backing. I guess it could be combustion air for the water heater, although just one vent was located in the furnace room.

Was the one vent a similar duct? When installed this way you may see one vent extending to near the floor and one terminating near the ceiling. Maybe there were two and one was not easy to see.

Yea, I have no idea. I scoured that furnace room only to find 1 vent. Looks like a mystery..., thanks for the help though.

Come on guys.... I can't believe everyone missed the obvious. They are vent terminations for a future marijuana grow operation. That's what most attics are used for here in Oregon.

Yeah ... but ... he is in Alaska.

The insulation should be against the underside of the roof sheathing for that.

Mr. Peck, you really need to get out more, if you think no marijuana is grown or used in Alaska.
The year I worked there on a DOT structure inspection contract, we had considerable difficulties, trying to hire local technicians who could both stay sober and not smoke weed on the job. Had to terminate more than half of the first month's crew.

I suggest you better ask for professional assistance with that matter.

As I recall, I based my comment on the fact that the attic space, where the crop would be grown, was on the COLD side of the insulation, and, in Alaska, it gets COLD ... thus that would not be conducive to growing plants on a year-round basis.

One could, I suppose, grow for about 6 months there, then wait until the following year for another crop, except that I don't know the growth cycle of the plants, will they mature enough in 6 months so they can be harvested?

I don't really need an answer to the growth cycle as I don't grow it or use it, the above just explains the thinking behind my reply.
