What is a Bcam? I don't have one. Is this a type of thermal imaging device?

Yes it is a Flir thermal imaging device. Mid - upper level unit.

I never seriously put any thought into actually acquiring one. In the past year, I think I was asked about thermal imaging twice so I am not sure about the marketability.

I would love to have one during a regular inspection but would need to justify the cost.

I don't doubt IR has its beneifts and it may become standard equipment for HIs some day. But the way many buyers nickle and dime over inspection fees, trying to convince people around here that the cost it would add to an inspection is worth it may be an uphill battle. It definitely would set you apart and provide a service most other HIs do not.

Great equipment and techonology but the whole "able to see through walls" thing just opens up a can of legal worms I'm not willing to take on yet. Maybe somebody who has and uses and IR cam can give their take on this end of things.

Yes, the cost is "justifiable" and you do no need to add "cost ... to an inspection" either.

You simply use it as you would any of your other tools for their advantages, such as moisture meters, SureTest, etc., and doing so *make your inspection* worth more (even without changing your cost) to the client than the inspectors who does not have an infrared camera.

Thus, especially in these times, having *AND USING* an infrared camera at every inspection puts you above the other inspectors who do not.

At $7-10000 startup cost I believe that I will need to charge extra for my standard inspection or maybe use it in conjuntion with other special tools and expanded reporting as a deluxe inspection at a higher cost than the standard.

I'd consider buying one except the local Utility Co. has 2 and they do surveys for free. Kind of a killer.

You would not be using it for the same purpose they would be using it for, your use would vary, and having one would show you things you are currently "missing". It also puts you a step above other HIs in your market who do not have one, all other things being equal (in fact, even with all other things not being equal, but at least 'being close').

Once I got mine, the simple fact that I had one and no one else did got my name circulated around a lot more than it was already being circulated around by my clients - my business was almost strictly referrals the last 4 years or so.
