    Default Vinyl Siding Install?

    Hey Fellows,
Inspected this home earlier this week and ran across this 'not so common' vinyl siding detail on a roof dormer. Anyone see anything wrong with doing it this way? My initial concern was with rain water and how it's going to drain away from the dormer?

Overall, I don't like it. Based on the overhang and steep main roof pitch it will probably be Ok.
However my concern is that during ongoing or heavy rain, water will get directed towards the corner trim. Water could get into the corner and run down along the inside. If the wall to roof flashing isn't great that could end up being an easy leak point.

I agree with Markus. Water is directed diagonally to run off under the trim.
The vinyl is designed to mimic good old-fashioned wood. The oldtimers would never hang beveled siding on an angle like that because it doesn't work right that way. And that's why it looks stupid.

I agree with Markus and John but installing the siding diagonally is an accepted method.

Vinyl siding can be successfully installed in a diagonal position by
slightly modifying the basic installation concepts.

    Question Re: Vinyl Siding Install?

Thanks guys. My sediments exactly. 1) Doesn't look good 2) water will drain down and into the corner trim (and if the flashing detail is not installed correctly well then water WILL get inside.

I just rechecked the Vinyl Siding Institute 2010 installation guide and they make no reference to the diagonal installation of of vinyl siding.

As such, it may be quite possible that the only vinyl siding siding allowed to be installed diagonally is that brand, or other brand which specifically states diagonal installation is acceptable.

    Just some food for thought.

This installation is fine. What's important is that the substrate is watertight which is a requirement of the vinyl siding manufacturers. Vinyl siding warranties do not cover moisture intrusion. The only remark that I would have is that the siding installer failed to leave a proper gap to the shingles.

for decorations purposes siding diagonal is normal. my concern would be that instead of using a starter strip on the bottom and leaving a 3/4" gap from the shingles to the siding. they used a J channel and have it tight to the roof. This allows water from ice build up to be sucked right into the house. The J channel water will run down yes but also hold water in the colder weather. vinyl or aluminum siding is never started with a J Channel, this allows the weep holes in the bottom of the siding to release any built up condisation.

Yep. I'm pretty sure Certainteed says horizontal only. But then, the installer would have to bother to read the installation instructions.

The above statements are expressed solely as my opinion and in all probability will conflict with someone else's.

And your concern was the method?
    I see a bit more.

The weather can enter the locks.
    There are also weep holes.
The wind can also affect this style of application. Call it out as a deficiency.

    Suspect: Vinyl siding.
Defect. The siding must be 2" inches above the decking.
I see no sizers ( step flashing ) nor counter flashing. You can?

Recommend a licensed installer reapplies the sidding in a normal pattern.
Deficiencies: Weather entry, blown-off siding by the buttlock.
The top lock and the Buttlock will be exposed to the weather at an improper degree.
You hang siding loose. It needs play to move. It expands and contracts. It is a bad job Robert. I hang or should say hung all types of material on the exterior envelope.
I can not imagine this application being done right.
The siding is to have a 2" inch exposure from the decking. I see none.
Time to go back and reread you Home inspection educational information Robert.
You are doing your client little help.

    Robert (Dalga),

The best thing you can do is to ignore posts like the one Robert Young posted, especially when they contain the spelling and wording errors such as that one does.

    Mr. Peck.
Again as I stated to Robert. Your opinion is noted and as valid as everyone's here.

We are from different country's. We also have different building practices and home inspection reviews and SOP.
The IEspell checker does not fail often and my spelling does need polish and education was hindered by 37 years of building and an accident that left me no alternative but to stop school and work.

Do not be so hasty in your judgment.
The queens English is still the statute when building sentence structure for many educational institutions around the world.
