    Default Cracking Vinyl Clad Windows

Does anyone have any experience with a vinyl clad window recall? I inspected a townhouse yesterday that had these type windows and all of the windows that were in the sun (8 out of 10) had split window sills allowing the wood to show through the vinyl. The split was from one side jamb to the other. I did some searching and saw that Anderson had some problems but I could not find a name on these windows so I am looking for general information. The house was 10 years old and the inside of the windows were wood and they tilt.

    James,
That sill is acting like a 2 pc sill where the nosing has started to come loose from the main sub sill.
They may be M&W vinyl clad windows out of Rocky Mt, VA which is now owned by Plygem and called pro series 800. MW used to be stamped on the spacer bar between the glass and sometimes on the sash lock. I've seen their vinyl peel off of the sash of clad windows and clad doors and have only heard of rotted sills.
Jeld-wen is another manufacturer that has acquired a number of window companies that sold vinyl clad windows in North Carolina and VA. I was able to send them digital pictures of the sash/glass spacer bar and they identified which brand of theirs it was for a sash replacement.
Andersen has their logo etched on the corner of the glass and their tilt sash had a special clip on the jamb liner that pushed it in to allow the sash to tilt.
The problem now is most manufacturers only warrant frames and parts for 10 years while the glass may be covered by 20years. A good quality sealant such a Quad would be best thing at present to prevent any further water penetration. Townhomes may have an association of management company that is responsible for any outside repairs, so would need to check bylaws or with them before getting too far along.
    Good luck,
    Jim

Good info....thanks! The townhouse community is full of these windows so I suspect that the HOA has heard of this problem before. The proper repair would be to replace the windows and that would involve removing the cement-fiber siding. I hope I hear back as to what happens.
