Fortunately, Mr. Abel’s long efforts on behalf of public safety eventually paid off with successful amendments to the 2006 codes, and wired glass is no longer allowed in locations subject to impact.

From the 2006 IBC:
715.4.6.1 Size limitations.
Wired glass used in fire doors shall comply with Table 715.5.3. Other fire-protection-rated glazing shall comply with the size limitations of NFPA 80.
- Exceptions:
- - 1. Fire-protection-rated glazing in fire doors located in fire walls shall be prohibited except that where serving as a horizontal exit,
a self-closing swinging door shall be permitted to have a vision panel of not more than 100 square inches (0.065 m2) without a dimension exceeding 10 inches (254 mm).
- - 2. Fire-protection-rated glazing shall not be installed in fire doors having a 11/2-hour fire protection rating intended for installation in fire barriers, unless the glazing is not more than 100 square inches (0.065 m2) in area.
The referenced table, Table 715.5.3 states: (see attached photo for table)
If you have the 2006 IRC on CD or in your computer, search "wired glass". It is prohibited only when "wire exposed on longitudinal edges shall not be used in jalousies or louvered windows".
- R308.2.1 Wired glass prohibited. Wired glass with wire exposed on longitudinal edges shall not be used in jalousies or louvered windows.
Note, this does not prohibit "wired glass" in doors, it only prohibits "wired glass" with "wire exposed" in its edges from being used in doors.
- R308.6 Skylights and sloped glazing. Skylights and sloped glazing shall comply with the following sections.
There are some permitted uses for wired glass in skylights and screens (for skylights), but, "skylights" are not likely to be impacted by human loads, so that section matches the Code Check information.
