    Makes you wonder what the thought process of this Fubar is?

    Maybe the mother in law stays upstairs.

    Had to cut that out to get some piece of furniture around that corner and up the stairs?

    You got the handrail too, I am sure.

    I'll bet that was one of those HGTV stair storage projects gone bad (if it is possible for one to go well).
    Somebody posted a picture that had drawers in the riser a long while back.
    Ricks picture looks like they intended to do a flip top tread.
