Default Odd thing in garage floor

Found this in a corner of a garage floor. it is made for some purpose but I've not come across this before. It is a metal container with screw on plastic lid. The container has no outlet or inlet and is the size of a gallon paint can. Can anyone shed some light as to what this is? Thanks, Mark
