Understair Firewall
Is there a requirement for firewall protection such as sheetrock in a void area under an interior stairway?
The home in question has a closet adjacent to the laundry room under the stairs. The closet walls and ceiling are covered with sheetrock. A previous owner has cut a large opening in the sheetrock at the rear of the closet to access the remaining void space under the stairs. The is now exposed wood framing accessible through the laundry closet.
Should the opening be restored to original condition? If someone wanted to use the remaining void area should the exposed wood framing be covered?

Re: Understair Firewall
Last time I checked our Code it only had to be drywalled if it was being used for storage in SF. No storage, no drywall.
I would suggest checking your local Code book.
