Identify this insulation....
This is from a Chicago house built around 1930. This was found in the walls and around a cast iron tub. It looks like cotton candy. Anybody know what is is? Could it be asbestos? Thanks...

Cotton candy sure looks a lot different in Chicago than in Columbus.
Ours is pink, light blue or yellow.

Re: Identify this insulation....
I'd report that (we are required to identify insulation in IL) as "mineral wool". If you want to get really specific, it's MMMF (man-made-mineral-fiber).

Re: Identify this insulation....
Ummmmm ... being as "mineral wool" is made from rocks, slag, and other minerals, does it, perchance, produce radon, adding to the radon in the home?

I'd be more concerned about breathing in the fibres when it is disturbed. Cough...cough...wheeze...

Well, if ya don't know then ya don't know.
Unless the insulation has a label on it then you really can't ID it. The best way to get around this type of state requirement is to simply state that the insulation can not be identified without a laboratory analysis. This is a true statement that can not be refuted.
If it is "rock wool", then it could contain asbestos. Just tell your client that it is possible but the only way to know for sure is to have it tested by a lab.
