Web site hosting and email
I am needing to change from my AT&T - Yahoo hosted website and email to a different source. Since I am relocating my home office, I might not have access to my current DSL provider through AT&T. (I Don't know what the ISP provider will be in the future)
I am thinking of transferring over to GoDaddy to host so I am not tied to my internet provider for my email files, etc.
Any words of wisdom to facilitate transfers?
Providers preferences? I have one of my sites with GoDaddy for several years with no issues but I have not run my email through their service.
I find it very useful to have access to historic email documents so I would like to be able to transfer or at least save everything now on Yahoo severs since I fear access to my paid account through AT&T- Yahoo will be lost once I drop their ISP service.
Thanks, Jim

Re: Web site hosting and email
Jim,
Why not just set up a email through GOOGLE and then choose whatever provider you want for internet service?

Re: Web site hosting and email
Well, I like my emails to show as from my business account like Jim@MrInspector.net and I have several years of email history that is easily searchable through the Yahoo interface.
Just looking for options from those more knowledgeable or more experienced with the transition.
I've never dealt with Google email, do they have something that will work with that?
I'm pretty sure that with GoDaddy hosting I can get my email to work like I want it for a reasonable fee that would free me from an ISP dictates.

Re: Web site hosting and email
Jim,
I've used Go Daddy for 6+ years without a hiccup. Excellent service, excellent rates.
I had my business e-mail through Go Daddy's as a Pop-Mail account ... which is what most everyone has and uses.
Google and/or G-Mail has some hiccups and it messes up formatting from time to time ... but then I doubt that any of them are perfect.
I switched it to Go Daddy's Microsoft Exchange Mail service. A click up in service and it works very well. Also is good with spam and such as well. I paid for a 3-year service if I recall correctly and have no regrets.
I also make sure my website domain is paid for "many" years in the future as that is a ranking element at Google for search visibility. You get down-graded if your website domain is on a year-to-year plan.
A lot of information to sort through ... best wishes.

How do the search engines know what plan you're on?

I can't speak in any granular detail about the algorithms any of the search engines use, but I've been advised by many professionals that it is and can be utilized in such.
While I was w/AT&T Labs and building massive internet web-hosting data centers I worked with many IT specialists who were always dealing with SEO items and this was one of the elements they included.
Of course ... it can change tomorrow as Google (for example) is always changing their algorithms so one's SEO can be a moving target.
BTW - if you do a 'whois' you can find out a fair amount of domain ownership ... including how long the current ownership is set for.
I'll be renewing mine this year ...

Re: Web site hosting and email
One of these days I'll learn to search first and then ask. I'd never heard of this strategy before, but a quick search shows that it's definitely out there, although controversial.
It makes more sense to me that search engines would care how long you've already had your domain name, rather than your future commitment.
I found one site where a Google employee of some kind said that the domain registration info isn't always available, so they don't pay that much attention to it.
Can't hurt, much, I guess, to pay a few years in advance.

Re: Web site hosting and email
My web site designer told me that purchasing your domain for 5+ years really shot you up in the search engine rankings. Don't know why, but it works.

Re: Web site hosting and email
The older your domain the stronger it is . Big points for just being out there over time.

Re: Web site hosting and email
I use GoDaddy too. Overall I'm happy with them. I currently use Website Tonight to build my sites.
I have been toying with the idea of getting my own design software to expand on my options for templates. If I do, I'll still use Godaddy for hosting.
I have the Godaddy email setup but I'm not actively using at this time. I like the interface look of it. I attached a screen shot of it.

Re: Web site hosting and email
I use my hosting simply as forwarding, that gives me my e-mail address at my domain name but allows all my e-mail to be forward to, and come in with, my internet connection service e-mail into Microsoft Outlook.

I've used Yahoo for my web hosting and business e-mail for 7 years. No complaints.

Re: Web site hosting and email
You can use Google mail service as a pop account and it'll come through with your domain as the from address, i.e. xxxx@b4uclose.com.
You can use Google mail serivce and have it come thru as a xxx@gmail.com account.
I have a couple of sites thru Google E-mail. I have it set up as a POP account so it comes from ME not G-Mail.com
It's good business to NOT have your site or your e-mail tied to your ISP. Change ISP and you lose everything kind of sucks.

Hi Jim,
You have lots of options. There is Mozilla's Thunderbird email that will download all emails to you computer. You can set up a new email with Google for your business use such as LuttrallInspections@gmail.com or whatever. I've done this. Look into Google Voice as well. You can set it up as your business number and forward to your sell, home, or office or all three. When you get a message, it sends you a text and/or email with the transcript and the sound file attached. No need to check VM ever again while in the field. It will send it to you. You can set up custom lists to only ring certain numbers and separate greetings for each list within the Gmail address book. Sweet system!
Microsoft Office Live offers a free site registration, and free hosting for one year. $12.95 a month after that. Very competitive! You can forward any email to whatever account you wish. I do it for some of my infrared business with Home. It's been working great. Getting lots of leads and work from that site.
Good Luck

Re: Web site hosting and email
Use Google apps. All of my hosting customers do this now
Welcome to Google Apps
Gmail web ui, POP3/IMAP as well. Awesomely reliable and not tied to your ISP. You just point your MX record to the gmail server and your off to the races.
