Unhappy Purple Wire nuts fo AL / CU splice

I just thought that some of you might find this interesting. I inspected a home just over a year ago and found several solid conductor aluminum circuits. I reported and advised the buyer to consult a qualified electrician and then moved on.

A few week ago he called and asked me to come over and look at "the wiring" OK now what. When I got there, it turns out that he had just had a new furnace installed and the HVAC guy found this wire nut in the existing furnace switch box.

The seller was prudent and had an electrician install "approved" connectors on all of the AL/CU splices.

Those purple nuts were the only 'approved' fix by the CPSC for years. That's since changed and there's a new crimp fitting of some sort that must be used.... probably because of problems like your pictures shows.

www.cpsc.gov has a bunch more info.....
