Does anyone know what year AFCIs started to be made mandatory in bedrooms? Sorry about the typo.

National Electrical Code® (NEC®) Requirements
NEC 1999
The National Electrical Code® (NEC®) first mandated the use of AFCIs in 1999 for the protection of branch circuits supplying bedroom receptacle outlets. The effective date was January 1, 2002.
210-12. Arc-Fault Circuit-Interrupter Protection
- (A) Definition. An arc-fault circuit interrupter is a device intended to provide protection from the effects of arc faults by recognizing the characteristics unique to arcing and by functioning to de-energize the circuit when an arc fault is detected.

Re: ASCIs
It is a major issue when on what code was adopted at the time tthe permit was issued, some juristictions are quick to adopt a new code & others are way behind in adoption of a code. But if CA would never adopt the 2008 NEC it would not hurt my feelings (From what I understand it takes effect in JAN) just because that AFCI's are snake oil that no one in the field can prove they work, unlike GFCI's which are a proven & inexpensive device.
