    Default Service Entrance

Has anyone seen this type of material before? I am not sure if this is wrapped around a metal conduit or not.

    Thanks,

    Ryan

Well it says "pipewrap" on the it! So logic would make me think that it is wrapped around the conduit..

Okay. Maybe I should be more specific. I am 99% sure that it is wrapped around the conduit but I have never seen this type of material wrapped around a conduit before. Does anyone have any useful information as to why they may have done this?

    Thanks,

    Ryan

PASCO’s “All Weather” Pipe Protection Tape is a tough
PVC plastic tape with special high tack adhesives formulated
to resist corrosion. It is easy to apply by hand with no
special tools or equipment. It provides positive protection
against abrasion and corrosive action for steel pipe, fittings
    & electrical conduit systems.
    Uses:
    • Corrosion protection for metal piping systems above and
    below ground.
    • Corrosion protection for fittings and joints on mill coated
    pipe.
    • Corrosion protection of electrical conduit & fittings.
    Features:
    • Resists corrosive action by salt water, soil acids, alkalies
    and salts.
    • Prevents dielectric corrosion between buried steel pipe
    and soil minerals.
    • Resists the effects of outdoor weathering and sunlight
    exposure.
    • High abrasion resistance.
    • Highly conformable over a wide temperature range.
    • Excellent insulating properties.
    • Resists commonly encountered chemicals and chemical
    vapors.
    • Protects against fungus and bacteria.
    • Standard widths.

The NEC has the following regarding direct burial of metal conduit.

300.6 Protection Against Corrosion and Deterioration.
Raceways, cable trays, cablebus, auxiliary gutters, cable
armor, boxes, cable sheathing, cabinets, elbows, couplings,
fittings, supports, and support hardware shall be of materials
suitable for the environment in which they are to be
    installed.

    (3) In Concrete or in Direct Contact with the Earth.
Ferrous metal raceways, cable armor, boxes, cable sheathing,
cabinets, elbows, couplings, nipples, fittings, supports,
and support hardware shall be permitted to be installed in
concrete or in direct contact with the earth, or in areas
subject to severe corrosive influences where made of material
approved for the condition, or where provided with
corrosion protection approved for the condition.

Most soil has a corrosive effect on metallic conduit and wrapping is good practice in any case.

PVC is generally a better option. I've dug up plenty of metallic conduit that consisted of a tube of asphalt/rubber filled with iron oxide
