Default Device Rigged to Fan Cord

This device was rigged to the cord of an old attic fan. Might it be some kind of thermostat?

Looks like a temperature probe found on an aquastat which is commonly used on boilers or heating systems. Note the male thread which would screw into a threaded port thus immersing the probe into liquid. Strange use here. Perhaps using it to sense attic temperature to operate an attic fan?

What ever it is the electrical connection would be required to be in an approved junction box with a cover.
