Is there a recommend maximum number of wires in a junction box?

Of course there is.
Box fill is defined in the NEC and there are ways to figure the volume of a box to determine the maximum capacity of the devices installed inside the box.
Plenty of charts and guides on the subject are available on line. You'll need to know the wire size, type of cable clamp, grounding conductor, device, etc.

The chart is in Article 314 of the NEC.
In the picture shown you have 7 12-2 cables for a total of 14 plus one ground. That box is overfilled by two conductors. An extension ring could be added to fix this.
