Cartridge style fuse size
Any way to determine the size of this fuse without withdrawing it?

None that I know. If it is the Main I ask the Owner or Realtor to call the owner and ask if it is OK before I pull the Main. Also check for any computers.

Pull the cover off, put your amp meter on the main and keep turning on stuff til it blows.

You don't even know if there are fuses in it at this point. You could pull it and find the fuses have been replaced with a couple lenghts of copper water pipe. Stranger things have happened!

Re: Cartridge style fuse size
Any chace that is just a disconnect without fuses, similar to A/C disconnects? I have not seen that particular style before.

I hope not - that's sitting between the meter and a (maxed out) 30 breaker load-side panel with no main disconnect....
