2008 - receptacles around pools
From the 2005 NEC. (bold and underlining are mine, as is the increased font size)
- 680.22 Area Lighting, Receptacles, and Equipment.
- - (A) Receptacles.
- - - (2) Other Receptacles, Location. Other receptacles shall be not less than 3.0 m (10 ft) from the inside walls of a pool.

New for 2008 NEC. (underlining is mine)
- 680.22 Area Lighting, Receptacles, and Equipment.
- - (A) Receptacles.
- - - (2) Other Receptacles, Location. Other receptacles shall be not less than 1.83 m (6 ft) from the inside walls of a pool.

Now that makes a lot of sense. Why would they do that?

I don't like any receptacles anywhere even near the pool but thats just my opinion.

So someone in the pool could reach out and touch an appliance or fixture with a 6 foot cord? At least if they pull it into the pool with them it will pull the plug out.
