pipe groove spec's - InspectionNews

I need to find a specification for 'pipe groove depth' measurement, standards, etc. This would be for 4"-6" cast pipe being used in wet/dry emergency sprinkler systems in a highrise.
My guess is there must be an ASTM or ASME type standard for this. Any suggestion would be appreciated.

I haven't found what I was looking for (what I think you are looking for), but you can start with these:

You can start with those and probably make some phone calls from there.

Now for my question ... Why? Why do you need that information?

The groove width and depth may very well vary between fitting manufacturers, meaning that one-size-may-not-fit-all, you may need to know the manufacturer of the fittings first.

Also, you would need to verify if the grooves were "cold rolled" or "cut".

Jerry to answer your question.
Highrise building, clamp on cap blew off of a 6" water pipe on the 29th floor;
Result- flooded portions of 4-6 units per floor and hallways, 29 floors down to basement.
Tenants flipping out and displaced; Tons of drywall removed, Environmental guy onsite everyday, etc. Removal and repairs ongoing.
I looked at the problem pipe and a new pipe, clear and evident difference in groove depth and curvature.
I do ongoing work for this client. Figured I would do some research for potential additional work and brownie points. I'm sure all sides will have lots of lawyers involved soon.

Sounds like one had a cut groove and the other had a cold rolled groove.

This isn't threaded pipe, it's the fire standpipes with the grooved joints.

All I could find in my ASTM standards was for the manufacture of the pipe, nothing on the groove joints.

Did you find something in your ASTM goggle search for grooved joints? If so, what ASTM numbers? I might have them.
