Cut deck joists, and flashing question.
On inspection today, on one deck joist, about 12' long there were 2 notched sections, replaced with 2X4. I assume due to rot, but the rest of the joists were fine. In my opinion this 2x10, is now essentially a 2x6. Any thoughts.
Second question, a porch roof added to side of house. There is just caulk, no visable flashing. This is a side wall that used to be open to the weather, but it should still be flashed to prevent moisture problems when the caulk fails, correct??

Re: Cut deck joists, and flashing question.
Yes, its now just about a 2x6, maybe a little better but needs a scab on both sides. The 2x4 present is nothing but a filler. Both of the scabs need to be about 6-8 feet long and could be 2x8 or 2x10 properly nailed (lots of nails).
The siding should have at least a one inch gap above the shingles with flashing visible.

Re: Cut deck joists, and flashing question.
What they did was over notch the joists and / or notch the joists where they are not allowed to.
As Bruce said, now those joists need proper repairs.
