    Default Looking for thoughts

I had a question asked today and thought it would be interesting to get some of your thoughts on this:

    Question:
IBC 2003 - A landing is required at exterior doors.
New commercial building proposed athletic Turf Surface at the rear side of building and at rear door landings.
Can the athletic Turf Surface be used at door landings if approved as martial compliant with accessible route (firm, stable, etc.)
I can not find a reason why it would be prohibited.

Don't know about any codes, but as long as the bottom of the carpeting was a non-skid type surface and it was sealed to the surface I can't imagine why it would be a problem.

    From the 2003 IBC.
    - SECTION 1003
    - - GENERAL MEANS OF EGRESS
    - - - 1003.4 Floor surface. Walking surfaces of the means of egress shall have a slip-resistant surface and be securely attached.

For Accessible Route floor surfaces, go here ( ADA Accessibility Guidelines ), go down to 4.5 ( ADA Accessibility Guidelines ), read 4.3.5* Carpet and see Fig. 8(f) ( ADAAG Figure 8F ) then go to the Appendix Note A4.5.1 ( ADA Accessibility Guidelines ) and Appendix Note A4.5.3 ( ADA Accessibility Guidelines ).

I am not sure that would be a suitable surface for an accessible route, if that was an accessible route (which your question indicates it may be).
