What is that foil tape being used for? Please tell me that they are not using it for flashing! I do not see any lag bolts hold the the thing together.

They should be hot dipped galvanized and if that is treated wood they need to be approved for use with treated wood.

Around here most AHJs would frown on that support pocket as 1) you don't know how much bearing is provided and 2) you can't easily inspect the wood member for the rot that will likely occur faster there than at the members which can more easily air-dry.

Scott is right. Purdue performed a study on the new ACQ treated lumber and after 18 months stainless steel and hot dipped galvanized (not zinc coated) fasteners and hangers were the only fastners that held up. All other were corroded to a point that they either were not firmly holding or have failed. I can't find the actual study on the internet but a search on ACQ fasteners will inform you.

How can you tell if the lumber was CCA or ACQ treated? ACQ treated lumber should be salty if you are brave (dumb) enough to lick it.

BTW,

You can tell hot dipped galvanized by their dull grey appearance. SS and shiny electroplated fasteners can be identified with a weak magnet. (strong magnets do attract to some grades of SS)

SS is generally not attracted to a weaker magnet.

Hope Scott does not mind my reply.

The reason you can't use foil tape for flashing would be the same reason you can't use
Duct tape to seal a Duct.

It is not listed for this application.

I will go a bit further. Joist hangers need to also be rated for ACQ. Look for a "Z" embossed on the hanger. Some lumber yards will now only sell ACQ rated hanger to avoid any problems.
