I believe that's an old garbage receptacle from the days when you were supposed to separate your food waste from regular trash. This was still in effect a few years ago here in Philadelphia, or maybe still is for all I know, but almost no one complies.

Re: Anyone know what this is?
The inside was about the size of a 5 gallon bucket. Maybe a little small for garbage?? Plus here, it would have to be bear proof. Its got a nice foot pedal for the bear to open right up.....

Cover comes off, Pail has a handle on it to lift out of the ground.

What you do with the Doo after that is up to you.

Re: Anyone know what this is?
When I was a little pup, the house garbage went into the can under the kick peddle.
Disposers were not invented yet. Guys in trucks emptied out the house garbage into bigger cans. Then dumped it into the 'Stink wagon' and off to the pig farm.
Still see abandoned garbage cans around old neighborhoods. Great hidding? places for the little kids. They should be removed.
Now its either disposer and/or wrap it tight and off to the dump.

Worked delivering milk as a kid. Tripped on them all the time.
Ah! the good old days
