exterior stain critter repellent?

I know there are lead paint encapsulation materials that include "bitters" to discourage kids from munching on the stuff. How about something similar for the exterior stain I'm using on my picnic table? It looks like the squirrels have been chewing on it. Maybe I should add some cayenne to the stain?
