Now Jack, there you go again.

You know the right side is for gravity load and the left side is for uplift.

Didn't you remember anything from that class?

Yep - "green side up".

Is that a hanger or a holder?

Are the joists on the left side cantalevered? If so, the positioning of the hangers might be correct.

I only have a moment, so this might not be clear.

If the joists on the left are cantilevered, the right end of the left joists are themselves supports. The beam could be supported by those ends. Depending on how else the beam is supported I can see that either the beam is supporting the joists or that the joists are supporting the beam.

Either way, it begs the question of why the three joists at the left rear have no hangers at all...

Re: "I got it on this end Bud!!!"
This deck had more issues than just those upside down hangers. This thing had a steel beam configuration under it that also needed a look at - I used the engineer card on this one.

On the open end of the beam there are four holes and signs there was a post attached at one point. I have a feeling it was removed when it was discovered they could not pull a car into the garage, and the "that'll do OK" mentality fell into place.

Perhaps because the steel beam underneath provides enough support for both the joists and the beam?

In my posts in this thread I am not saying that what is in the photograph is right, I am saying that what we see might be right.

Of those three joists Michael mentions, why was the middle one installed at all? There is a lot that we cannot tell from the photograph.

Re: "I got it on this end Bud!!!"
Contractors do this all the time for cantilered joists, installing the hanger the other way might support the joist for the span portion somewhat, but the cantilevered portion has all the uplift when people are on the deck. Usually the span portion is end nailed to withstand any downward force, which is what we all did prior to metal joist hangers anyway. I can't really tell why all of the cantilevered joists are not installed this way. David

Jack
There's nothing wrong with that installation as we always did it that way whenever we installed joist crown down.

Re: "I got it on this end Bud!!!"
The hangers were right side up on the other end of the joists.

Maybe only half the joist was crowned? Ya think??
