Gas control valve in firebox
It seems to me that this gas control is awfully close to flame...any thoughts?

As far as I know it's ok for gas log, not wood burning.

Eric is correct. That is 'part of' a listed and labeled gas log set. You can see the insulation on the floor, which is intended to look like 'burning embers' when the gas log set is on and burning.

Valve is fine if the entire set is listed to ANSI Z21.60. However, that gas knockout to the right is not properly sealed.
Keep the fire in the fireplace.
