    Default Flue gases cont.

I almost just tacked this onto the attic thread but it's a bit different.

New construction, 30K BTU gas fireplace. The direct vent is approximately 10" from an opening bedroom window (near the bottom of the opening part, if that matters). When I fired it up I could see the steam blow directly into the bedroom when the window was open.

This just can't be right..... I checked the install manual and couldn't come up with anything but didn't really look all that long.

Even if the manual allows this (doubtful) there's a clause about the manual not superceding any local codes. I would think the one posted in the 'attic' thread about venting everything to the outside would apply?

    What say you?

*IF* ... that big *IF* ... the installation instructions use the same clearance chart as on the other thread, then the clearance to an operable window is shown as 'B', which is 12", either above, below, or beside the operable window. Note that "diagonally down and out from the corner" is greater than 12", measure 12" below and extend that horizontal line to 12" beyond the window, that would be the specified clearance at the corners of the windows.

Remember, those are "MINIMUMS" and visual evidence that those are insufficient is sufficient evidence that then are non-complying as they are also not allowed to circulate back into the house.

Thanks JP... I've pasted Jim L's pasting off of the 'Attic' thread below. Is this the best reference that applies?

    2003 IRC

G2427.3 Design and construction. A venting system shall be designed and constructed so as to develop a positive flow adequate to remove flue or vent gases to the outdoor atmosphere.
    g2427.8 #3
10,000 or less at least 6 inches from any air opening into the building
over 10,000 to 50,000 at least 9 inches
Over 50,000 at least 12 inch vent termination clearance.
The bottom of the vent termial and air intake shall be located at least 12 inches above grade.

    Matt,

Yes, and here is the complete reference Jim L. gave and all of 3.:

    - G2427.3 (503.3) Design and construction. A venting system shall be designed and constructed so as to develop a positive flow adequate to convey flue or vent gases to the outdoors.
    - G2427.8 (503.8) Venting system termination location.
    - - 3. The vent terminal of a direct-vent appliance with an input of 10,000 Btu per hour (3 kW) or less shall be located at least 6 inches (152 mm) from any air opening into a building, and such an appliance with an input over 10,000 Btu per hour (3 kW) but not over 50,000 Btu per hour (14.7 kW) shall be installed with a 9-inch (230 mm) vent termination clearance, and an appliance with an input over 50,000 Btu/h (14.7 kW) shall have at least a 12-inch (305 mm) vent termination clearance. The bottom of the vent terminal and the air intake shall be located at least 12 inches (305 mm) above grade.

And here is how you get to the above:
    - G2427.2 (503.2) Venting systems required. Except as permitted in Sections G2427.2.1, G2427.2.2 and G2425.8, all appliances shall be connected to venting systems.
    - - G2427.2.1 (503.2.3) Direct-vent appliances. Listed direct-vent appliances shall be installed in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions and Section G2427.8, Item 3.

    Also this:
    - M1801.2 Draft requirements. A venting system shall satisfy the draft requirements of the appliance in accordance with the manufacturer’s installation instructions, and shall be constructed and installed to develop a positive flow to convey combustion products to the outside atmosphere.

More than enough to state your case and provide supporting documentation.
