Default Proper way to measure Hearth Extenstion

Does any one know if the hearth extention on a masonary fireplace should be measured out from the "front " or "rear" of the facebrick? See photo.
    Thanks.

Front, the way you've got the tape. That hearth needs to be wider.
I've seen people lay a row of tiles across the front for a simple upgrade.

Is that a raised foundation? If so, I believe there shouldnt be any wood below the hearth extension-check with Bob Harper, he'll know for sure.
