    Default Chimney flashing

    Hi everyone,

Is this kind of flashing recommanded around a chimney (looks like asphalte membrane)? Is it installed properly??

I can see roof shingles installed on the top of the chimney, isn't better to have aluminum flashing ?

What should I recommand in the report ?

    Thanks for your help

Lots wrong with that. Yes, the flashing is just wrong, it should be metal. The top side of the chase needs a 'cricket or saddle' to direct water and snow away from it. The top can be shingles, however, the Flue must be 3 feet higher, so that needs to be raised to 3 feet. A concrete crown would be nice to see, but I imagine that the chase we are looking at may not hold the weight.
As for writting it up. Defer it to a WETT certified professional and suggest they not use it until it is WETT SITE certified. It can be made code compliant, its gonna cost a couple bucks. Good call.

    Definitely not right.

Flashing should be integrated (see an example), not simply wrapped around the flue chase. Example is a masonry type.. but you can find similar.

Looks like the entire install is Amateur like work, defer to specialist for repair (would be ripped out/down anyway).

Clearances... the rain collar wasn't/isn't designed to be used to create proper distance to combustibles for that flue... and it probably isn't. Typical comments by most inspectors would probably indicate that the appliance is not recommended for use until repaired as needed by specialist.

    Cool Re: Chimney flashing

Wayne, you beat me to it on the stink pipe flashing being upside-down. Regardless, it is still improperly installed.

    No cricket
    no flashing
roofing lapped upside-down on downhill side of roof
If no corner boards, probably should have some sort of extra flashing strip around those corners behind the claps.
Need a proper chase top with overhang for drip edge. Would recommend sheetmetal with min. 2" overhang and pitched for drainage.
Regardless, chase top must be ventilated--see mfrs listed instructions for that chimney
rain collar should not be tight to the chase top.

The chimney does extend 3ft above the roof. Can't tell from here about 2/10 rule.

You're gonna pour a concrete slab crown on a framed chase???

Where you find on goofy thing, you're bound to find more. Recommend at least level II inspection. Would strongly recommend pulling the rain collar to verify clearance to combustble chase sheathing.

Can't wait to see the stove or oil burner installation inside. Any pics?

Looks like a real hack master has been busy here. DIY Darrell and his other brother Darrell?

Good luck to the purchaser in obtaining home insurance policy with a chimney like that.
