Gas line in fireplace - InspectionNews

In a fireplace that used to have a gas insert, but now does not, is it OK to have the old gas line capped off in the fireplace. There is a shut off valve.

I don't see a problem with it. BUT.............!

My concern would be with the condition of the innards of the fireplace. What is the condition of the FP, damper, throat, smoke shelf, the flue (tiles) pipe, etc. Inserts can cause a great deal of damage to a masonry FP. At a minimum I would call for NFPA 211 14.3 Level II Inspection.

This should trigger a Level 2 Chimney Inspection. The fuel and the appliance has changed.

No problem with the capped pipe (unless it's leaking). This is how it is done around here. Thus, if the new owners want to convert to gas logs (you can tell them that a gas line is present).
