Venting Oil furnace and Wood Burning Fireplace
Yesterday I had a dinosaur oil furnace that had several issues all it's own, but my question is about the venting... The oil furnace was sharing the flue with a wood burning fireplace (see photo). There seemed to be enough rise in the furnace flue, but I'm not certain that these two can share the same flue. I had soot around the flue, which I immediately went to the issues that I was having with the furnace, however I'm wondering if some could be from backdrafting of the fireplace??

Thanks in advance!
Reis

"Solid-fuel-burning appliances shall not be connected to a vent or chimney flue serving other appliances."

(reference 2000 IRC §M1801.11)

cannot vent anything with wood including other wood.

I doubt you have your 18" clearance off that connector to the ceiling.

Is that lick 'em & stick 'em brick? Combustible wall?

What kind of chimney?

Re: Venting Oil furnace and Wood Burning Fireplace
I got the combustible wall and just had a feeling on the wood-burning not venting with anything else. Thanks for verifying my "bad feeling"! This list has been awesome. Thanks to everyone for your input! It's nice not to feel alone out there...

Happy inspecting!
