I went over to the dark side
Well with my body collapsing, the down turn in the economy, I finally bit the bullet and went over and joined the enemy.
Now I am one of those.............AHJ, yeah thats right I said it, I took a full time job as a CEO/BI/Fire Marshall/Civil Defense Director.
After 17 years of working for myself, and now a public servent.
Oh well, life goes on.

And for a brief moment I was thinking as Wayne, that you'd become a Realtor. Well, at least your parents can still be proud of you.

Re: I went over to the dark side
A person I worked with for years doing HIs took a job with the county a few years ago and is doing great. After doing HIs you have a unique perspective of seeing how things actually perform and you have better people skills than a civil servant who's been stuck in an office all his life.
Congrats.... you'll do great at it.

Re: I went over to the dark side
After working on my own for 30 years. That would be so hard to be at a job at 8:00am and punch a clock. Then sit in a meetings and then have the boss hand me my work load for the day. 18 stops.
only get 1/2 HR for lunch then back to the grind... then the city pagers goes off its the boss where have you been? your way behind. your going to need to pick up the pace. don"t forget to log in you gas/miles for the day. we need to have a meeting when you get back in the yard. its been a long first day....

Re: I went over to the dark side
I punched a clock once.
Then they told me to never come back and they'd mail my final check.

Re: I went over to the dark side
I may have to switch sides here pretty soon. I can't take it anymore, watching these real estate agents making 100k commisions and they are not that bright.

Re: I went over to the dark side
Ron,
It's a lot different here. Most anywhere else I would not even consider it, but the average home in park city is over a million dollars. I did two inspections for a lady last week who just sold a 6 million and 4 million dollar home. That's would be nice to spend that

Re: I went over to the dark side
Lee, we'll all be government workers sooner or later, right.
Either that, or dependents. I think you'll be on the better side of things.

Re: I went over to the dark side
Welcome to the dark side! You'll find things are a lot of the same stuff but yet quite different at the same time. Only thing to remember it's not you're opinion any more but what the code was at the time the structure was built.
You'll do fine! Keep your nose clean, go by the book, and you won't get in too much trouble.

Always good to have friends on "the inside".
Good luck and treat those home inspectors right when they call you.

Re: I went over to the dark side
The current shabby state of the housing stock don't have a thing to do with getting in trouble. It's trying to require things that are not regulated by the code. Remember........HI's can point out things that are not in the code......AHJ's must go by the code "as written".
AHJ inspectors requires a remodeling contractor to install arc faults where not required......contractor goes to AHJ's inspectors boss.....AHJ inspector gets written up for making up crapola not required by the code! Or calls councilman...councilman contacts city manager....city manager.....wel it may get ugly!
That's why I say
Politics is also a BIG TROUBLE maker!!!
Besides shabby houses do not exist in my jurisdiction....well not since I've came on board anyway.........other jurisdictions....Yep!! Totally agree.
Which brings to mind a remodel I did for my mother about 8 years ago. Pier and beam....installed all the under floor plumbing....called for inspection.....inspector asked "Did you use purple primer?"....Uhhhh yes..."That's okay then, go ahead and cover it up!" ....True story!
That was in Azle Texas for those of you around the DFW area! So yes I know where you guys are coming from when you run down AHJ's.
That's why I said "Keep your nose clean, go by the book, and you won't get in too much trouble."

Re: I went over to the dark side
Well Lee......I must admit that the thought of someone esle paying the overhead, insurance, etc....etc.....etc... has crossed my mind a time or three. But at the end of the day I like being my own boss and treating people the way I feel they deserve to be treated. Hope it goes well for you.
