I thought I would post on here just to give you guys/girls something to think about when it comes to cell phone insurance.

First of all, I am NOT a big insurance buyer. Hate the stuff and only buy it when necessary.

I bought an HTC Thunderbolt (I should start another thread about NOT buying a thunderbolt -- but I digress). I didn't buy the Verizon insurance; it was $7.00/month with a $100 deductible. I never dropped my previous Blackberry, so I figured, what the heck.

Anyway, the holster that I purchased for the thunderbolt from the Verizon store was really not very protective. As a matter of fact, when I merely brushed it with my arm, the phone would come shooting off of my belt like a rocket. Usually at this point, I would observe the protective case self-ejecting as if it could sense the impending danger and wanted to distance itself from not only the crash site, but from being crushed by weightier phone.

After several drops of the phone, I started to get a little nervous. I mean, after all, if a self-conscious, highly OCD, anal-retentive home inspector like myself can drop his phone several times (some on concrete), what could this mean? I had already passed the Verizon insurance deadline, aka, "Non-Buyer's Remorse". So I began doing a little research and found several online companies who would love nothing more than to take my money in exchange for the risk of my reckless, phone chunking.

I came across Worth Ave. Group. Seems like a little mom and pop shop in OK (probably is a huge conglomerate). So I bought the insurance on October 1st. For my phone, it cost $117 and there is a $50 deductible. (If you are still following along this equals $167 if you need to use it versus $184 with Verizon). This coverage amount is $599.

Well....who couldn't see where this was going? If you couldn't, I call into question your highly honed skills of deduction and home inspection moxy.

On 11/18, my phone took its final flight. The screen shattered into 314,159,265 pieces. The phone actually was still functional.

I called Worth Ave expecting them to tell me to get it fixed and they would pay for repairs. The nice lady on the phone said, "Just go buy a new one, mail us the old one and we'll mail you a check." I'm like, "REALLY??"

So.......I received the check today for $549 ($599 minus the $50 deductible)....a mere 15 days from the accident. Needless to say, I'm impressed. A quick turnaround and I'm still covered on my new phone.

BTW, I also bought a Trident Electra protective case and holster.....just in case, you know.
