    Default I wish I still had ...

Rick posted a thread where he titled it "I wish I still had ... " and my first thought was ...

    BUT FIRST ...

What 'whatever' related to home inspection that you sold, gave away, got rid of, etc., do you wish you still had?

The thing which came to my mind when I read Rick's title was ...

    I WISH I STILL HAD ...

    ... my infrared camera ...

I miss it, and every now and then would still like to have it to use for whatever I'm doing at the time.

I wish I still had my ability to go to dinner at a friend's house without thinking that their house was going to burn down or they would die in their sleep of CO poisoning or their child was going to fall through the 4.5" gaps in their stair railing or the mailman was going to trip on the sidewalk and sue them or..........

I go to my kid's bball game and, instead of talking to my wife during timeouts, I scan the rafters for roof leaks and improperly installed beam hangers.

    ... my infrared camera ...

I found a new use for mine yesterday.

Monday evening I noticed some bees hanging around one side of my house and they were going in between the brick and and the upper cladding.
Tuesday morning after I called the exterminator I tried the IR just to see what I could see. Sure enough. It showed the exact location - a hot spot about the size of a football. A triangulation of views showed them to be between floors. Shortly after the exterminator did his thing, we cut about 2 square foot opening in lower level gypsum ceiling at the area where the IR showed tem to be. 30 minutes later, bees gone, honey extracted and residue cleaned, ceiling temporarily patched and on with life.
I did not think to take pics - wish I had.
By the way, exterminator said sometimes he has to spend lots of time trying to determine locations!!!

Sounds like you may have just opened up a new market for your infrared services.

The answers above proves my point; once an inspector, always an inspector. Even when traveling I check hotel security enclosures around their pools/spas and usually find a code violation. When you go to a friends house for dinner have a few belts before and keep your eyes straight ahead. What's worse is being invited to visit an old friend's new home.

    "Usually"?

I can't walk in the main entry without already having a list of many items.

    Starting with:
    - no detectable warnings on the walkway at the drive
    - improper detectable warnings on the walkway at the drive
    - trip hazard on the walkway
    - buried junction boxes in the landscaping areas
    - blah, blah, blah
    - by the time I get to the front desk I'm waiting for the place to come crashing in on me ...

Then go into the conference rooms and see how they draped the exit doors for emergency egress and if you should walk the service corridors note the furniture and equipment stacked up throughout them. Plus, I never stay above the 4th floor in any hotel. You ask why?

Because ... that's how far the ladders can reach.

Me, I'll get to the stairway so I can pull out my force gage and measure the force to open the stairway door under pressurization (don't get to check that very often ) ... one last check before heading down ...
