Re: Signs of the time
How about this:
The past few weeks there have been articles in the paper about a real estate company based in Chicago called the Miami Corp. It is one of, it not the, largest landowners in the country (I think one article said it was the largest, just not sure).
Anyway, they own land, one contiguous piece, which straddles from Volusia County (where I live) into Brevard County (the next county down), they are discussing creating a new city.
(let that soak in a few minutes - Yes, a "new city")
How much land do they own in that one contiguous piece? Well, they started buying up small pieces in the 1920's and kept buying. During the last 50 years they have been operating a timber farm.
They are planning on setting aside 35,000 acres (yep, 35 thousand acres) for a permanent wildlife reserve.
(dang, how much land do they own?)
They are planning on development going on for 75 years, building 35,000 to 50,000 new homes.
(okay, how much land do they own - out with it)
They own 90+ SQUARE MILES! IN ONE PIECE OF LAND!
