What’s Lurking in Your Countertop? Radon@#%!
The granite, it turned out, contained high levels of uranium, which is not only radioactive but releases radon gas as it decays.

Geiger counter indicated that the granite was emitting radiation at levels 10 times higher than those he had measured elsewhere in the house.

Question?

Are we going to be telling clients to rip out those granite counter tops?

Have you had to do this as of yet? I see you do radon inspections.

Maybe Formica will have a big comeback and be priced at 22. a sq.ft.

Rick

Re: What’s Lurking in Your Countertop? Radon@#%!
No... I have enuf to explain with high radon levels as it is.

I find it interesting that the radon inspector has a gieger counter!! I don't plan on buying one.

In "Nanny State Land" everything is dangerous. "be afraid, very afraid"

They (chemically, electromagnetic, mold spore, fragrance sensitives) were trying to ban WiFi from governemt buildings here in "The City Different"

According to the article we would have to warn them about the radioactive smoke detectors in their house.

From article:

"Indeed, health physicists and radiation experts agree that most granite countertops emit radiation and radon at extremely low levels. They say these emissions are insignificant compared with so-called background radiation that is constantly raining down from outer space or seeping up from the earth’s crust, not to mention emanating from manmade sources like X-rays, luminous watches and smoke detectors."

Better check the contract agreement disclaimers... again!!!

Re: What’s Lurking in Your Countertop? Radon@#%!
The measurement of gamma radiation as well as ionizing radiation fall well within the scope of service of a radon inspector. As a NRPP and FL DOH certified radon analytical laboratory have been measuring gamma ralated to radon , radon emanation from building materials and soils for the past 15 years.

The "hot" granite is not a new issue as is radon from concrete, high radon levels have been showing up in 20+ story buildings all over the US. In Florida we have delt with it since 1990 and 1000,s of apartments , condos, SF Homes, etc have been mitigated as a result.

We are now testing granite and other composite materials for radon emanation as well as potentially dangerous gamma and alpha radiation. Our results will not be influeced by any trade interested faction. As we have the capability to directly measure the actual radon emanating fraction of any materials' Radium-226, uniuque radon daughter Po214 alpha in a specific energy band.

Lets see what the results of the Texas radon testing by another group,
