Thread: tallish vent

I wasn't inspecting this house, except the way most of us inspect houses we happen to be walking past.

Vent seems a tad excessive, what?

They may have had some draft problems. Generally, the top of the chimney should be 2' higher than anything within 10' of it. It just looks sloppy all out-of-plumb and crazy guy wires.

It's probably a gas vent, in which case chimney rules don't apply.

John is correct, you guys are applying chimney height requirements to gas vents, which are different.

Gas vents are required to be 1 foot minimum in height above the roof on the high side (and higher depending on the slope of the roof), and 2 feet higher that any obstruction (such as a wall) which is within 8 feet of it.

The chimney rule is 3, 2-10 (3 feet high minimum, and 2 feet higher than any part of any structure within 10 feet).

The gas vent rule is 1*, 2-8 (1 foot high minimum and *higher depending on roof slope, and 2 feet higher than any vertical obstruction within 8 feet).
