    Default 3-phase for AC compressor

Has anyone ever come across an AC compressor wired for 3 phase? This home was built in 1960 and was wired for this.

This compressor was installed in 1998 and converted.

    An enigma?

Here's a photo of the breaker.

Frequently on older homes (1950s, 1960s vintage) in South Florida.

Because 3-phase has advantages for motor efficiencies.

Spoke with my electrical engineer friend this evening, he said that the motors are substantially cheaper and they run better in 3 phase (just as you said).

    Thanks

I agree with Thompson A.C requires 3 phase to run efficiently. though it could be run on 2 phase but there will be lot of fluctuation problem
