    Default Heat shield

Is this intended to be a permanent part of a heat shield or packing material. This is an American Standard 90 percent gas furnace.

Appears that the shipping/packaging material was never removed.

It's a noxious smoke generation system, for random testing of the smoke alarms in the home.

They would take it out but it burned their fingers.

Thought it might be a good place to thaw out some steaks.

I agree with the rattle theory. No way that got there by accident.

Had a similar situation on a 80 furnace in a mobile home. They used egg crate material. Only found 1 scorch mark on the three areas they stuffed it.

I cant tell by the photo if it is a paper packing (egg crate) type material or if it might be a material that is similar to rock-wool insulation, like some of the covers being used over non-IC rated recessed lights. I'm just curious enough that I would break off a piece and and try to burn it. I would agree that it is probably been put there as a vibration dampener.

I would say it was some packing material. Some older furnaces would have similar heat shields, but with this one being a 90% you just wouldn't have that much heat to worry about.
