Default Need help on Lennox condenser size

Look at these two condensers on the same house 3000 sq ft house. I am guessing the unit that reads "47" is 4 tons and other is 1.5 tons (The 1.5 ton unit is for themaster bedroom suite only).

Why would theyuse “47” and not “48”?

Their published technical info says“48” but the actual condenser says “47”. I have seen this before on otherLennox units. Never understood why they put 47 on the condenser but their info says 48. I have seen this before on Lennox units.

    Anyone know for sure?

    Talking just under 4 tons?

A few bricks shy of a ton? Have seen similar ballpark markings but no real explanation other than it does not rate exactly that many tons.

You know Jack, that actually makes the most sense. However their documentation does not list "47" but anyway, I agree with you, that is the best answer I have heard.

    Thanks.

Units are rarely rated in BTU's that are exactly divisible by 12.
It is a 47,000 BTU unit but common trade parlance is 4 tons.
And the actual measured "tonnage" may be different still depending on the coil and blower it is matched with and then reduced for the actual delivered tonnage.

Unless you are a glutton for punishment (or an engineer) leave well enough alone! it is a 4 ton

Thought I'd help with this instead of just lurking-

Newer Lennox units that have a "47" instead of "48" are the same capacity as the 48 unit, but have a higher efficiency rating. In this case, the 47 will hit up to 16 SEER and 9 HSPF, where the 48 probably gets 15 SEER / 8.5 HSPF at best. This is normally used if there are local rebates that require slightly higher efficiency ratings.

Also, with all Lennox serial numbers the 3rd & 4th digits represent the year of manufacture.
