    Default Furnace register

    Hi everyone,

Is it recommended to have a Furnace supply on the garage ceiling ? Isn't there a risk for the carbon monoxide to get in the house ? I usually see a normal electric baseboard in a garage.

    Not Allowed in the Garage.

    *taken from IRC 2006

R309.1.1 Duct penetration. Ducts in the garage and ducts
penetrating the walls or ceilings separating the dwelling from
the garage shall be constructed of a minimum No. 26 gage
(0.48 mm) sheet steel or other approved material and shall have
    no openings into the garage.

I write it up as a safety hazard not only for CO gas but it breeches fire separation requirements. Even if there is not living space above the garage, the garage is also supposed to be separated from its attic space by appropriate fire rated materials. By appropriate I mean whatever the local jurisdiction requires. And if the local does not apply, I refer to the IRC.

As previously stated - no openings to the garage ... from the system serving the house, the garage is permitted to have its own system with its own openings.
