Default Ventless gas log set or not?

Inspected a masonry fireplace in the basement with gas log set. Chimney flue was blocked (plywood) and damper closed. Can't tell if the gas log set is ventless or not....help?

    Robert,

Regardless whether it was vented or not, that plywood is combustible ... but you already knew that.

There will be some metal tags attached (usually by a chain) to it with information and warnings, and will state what it is (vented or ventless) ... no metal tags attached and it is "nothing" ... as in 'it is not listed or labeled nor suitable for use without those tags and that information'.

The wood is a giveaway that this is not right. As Jerry said, look for the tag on a chain or wire cable. Just looking at that unit I would say it is a ventless that will produce enough heat to cook that plywood.

Looks like a typical ventless unit. Every unit I've seen always had the metal tags with info attached. If they are gone. Defect the unit. Plywood closure sounds like another DIY. Probably removed the tags because he didn't like the look of them.

Just burn them for a little while and they will become vented logs....

BTW, the listing on the tag would read ANSI Z21.11.2 for ventfree, Z21.84 for match lit vented and Z21.60 for regular vented logs.
