That seems to be a forced air system. So I can not see why that is there. I have seen something like that on a boiler system, where the code would not allow a direct connect to the potable water supply due to the dangerous chemicals in the boiler lines. This was before they trusted auto fill valves with a RPZ protecting against back-flow. So the system engineer basically had to keep an eye on the pressures and such and manually topped off the water as needed along with the chemicals they where using in this system.

Yeah, that's kind of what I was thinking. Not being used now. I think with the install of a new A/C system the pan or screen was removed.

Maybe the heating unit runs on white wine from CA.
