Furnace / Boiler Shutoff Location
What is the standard for the location of of the service power switch on a boiler and furnace?
I am seeing them at doorways to the basement and more often, on the unit themselves.

What should be called out?

Re: Furnace / Boiler Shutoff Location
both are needed. At the top of the stairs for an emergency shutdown and by the unit for the tech

Re: Furnace / Boiler Shutoff Location
I see, Is there a date that this rule came into play?
Does anyone have documentation on this?

I always like to be able to back up my findings.

Thank you for the info.

Re: Furnace / Boiler Shutoff Location
I'm not aware of a disconnect required at the top of the stairs but one is required at the unit itself or within site.

TABLE E4001.5
DISCONNECTING MEANS
Air-conditioning condensing units and heat pump units.
A readily accessible disconnect within sight from unit as the only allowable
means. *a
a. The disconnecting means shall be permitted to be installed on or within the unit. It shall not be located on panels designed to allow access to the unit.

Re: Furnace / Boiler Shutoff Location
What is this 'basement' that you guys are speaking of. Just at the unit itself around here, unless you count the breaker panel as a shut off. Generally just a plug that can be removed from the receptacle outlet.

Re: Furnace / Boiler Shutoff Location
Thank you Wayne, what is that from? NRC?

Jim, A basement is one or more floors of a building that are either completely or partially below the ground floor.

You're welcome!
It's actually from the 2006 IRC but the NEC has the same wording or real close to it!
