I see your delima, but it looks to me that its a 4 ton unit;age unknown but if you see the ANSI label is 1985 so it has to be within 4 years of that .Hope that helps.

Re: Age for Magic Chief AC/GFAF combo unit?
Thanks.

How does the ANSI date work? Is it date plus four years, or four years on either side?

Do they issue new standards every four years, or do you have to have a list of the dates revised standards were issued?

BTW, here's the full plate:

Michael Ansi date says it is at least that new. First I have heard of the 4 year thing but I usually find they are pretty close within that range.

Basically, the ANSI standard date means it was built that year, or later.

Many standards have a short life, 2-3-4 years, however, some standards are still good a decade later ... all depends on the improvements in what is covered by that particular standard.

If nothing else, you could contact ANSI at:

online chat: ansionline@ansi.org

e-mail: info@ansi.org

phone: 212-642-4900

Ask then when was the next updated to that standard Z21.64-1985.

That will tell you it was in or after 1985, and it was in or before the year of the next update.

On the Magic Chef serial numbers, use the last three letters of the serial number, GGB.

First letter is month, second letter is year, and last letter is manufacturing plant.

G month = July
G year = 1986 (which fits nicely with your 1985 ANSI date there)

Thanks.

That unit is sitting in a closet where access the the filter cover fasteners is obstructed by the bifold door at one end (you *might* be able to get it open with a "stubby" style screwdriver) - I have to wonder if the filter has been changed since 1986!
