Got an oil burning furnace. (don't see many of them around here)

Elderly lady seller ain't sure, buyer questioning age of furnace.

It's in a fourteen year old house but the ANSI standard date on the tag is 1986 which makes me think it's about 20 years old.

I'm thinking it was built around 86 to 89?

More my curiousity than a real need. But buyer is asking.

I told em:

The filter was not properly in place to filter the air and the blower fan blades are covered with crud which impedes the operating efficiency of the unit.

This has also usually allowed dust to come in contact with the wet air conditioning coils. Wet plus dust equals mud on the coils equals the coils being partially blocked (I can't see the coils to verify this though).

Blocked coils further degrade the operating efficiency of the unit. For energy efficiency & lower operating costs, I recommend that you have the heating and cooling unit serviced and cleaned (to include removal and cleaning of both the fan and the coils) by a heating and air conditioning contractor (familiar with oil burning furnaces ) capable of fixing any other problems found while the unit is dismantled.

Given it's age and condition, you may be better off just replacing it with a newer more energy efficienty system.

Erby, I tried to google them but no go.Did find a relation to Willamson. Mabey call info in their state. They will have the age. That thing if its related to Willamson is a good unit but looks like it needs cleaning and serviceing, Soot is blow back from poor draft. They know cause they tried to clean it off. Did you feel heat coming back out of the view port when opened?
Are there any service tags. Oil fired has to be cleaned every year if not more in some cases.

Carrier Blue Book lists a Metzger LBO-120 as being 1992-1993 manufacture date, can't find a LBO-120R listed.

look up a Danny Fryman in Lexington, he has done a lot of oil work in the area. Ask him about the basement at xalapa farms.

Prestons guide has an LBO-120 1992 to 1993. No LBO-120R.

Measured Performance more than just a buzzword

I'd tell them that oil fumes are more explosive than gas and that the furnace lacks the modern safety features. It needs to be serviced to assure safe operation.

What kind of modern safety features does it lack?

The older oil furnaces keep pumping in oil even when the main flame does not ignite. Raw oil on a hot fire box can create fumes that are highly explosive.
