Default HI finds cash in attic

Halifax building inspector finds $10,000 in ceiling of older home - Local - News - The Cape Breton Post

HALIFAX — Home inspectors come across some strange sights, but few as unusual as $10,000 in cash hidden in a ceiling.
Scott Davis, a Halifax inspector, made the discovery Wednesday as he was inspecting an older residence on Barrington Street on behalf of a buyer.
He was looking for access to the building’s attic when he pushed up a ceiling tile to see if it was hiding an entryway.
Instead he found a bag holding a bundle of old $20 bills.
The bag had $17,000 written on it, but a count put the amount at about $10,000.
The buyer’s realtor gave the money to police who then gave it to the family involved in an estate sale.
“It really is one of those moments you know you are not going to forget,” said Davis, who owns the Halifax franchise of Canadian Residential Inspection Services.
“The stash was all old $20 bills, so the money was likely put up there sometime before the new twenties came out. The money might have been sitting there since the ’80s.”
The person buying the house had left the property after Davis, accompanied by a realtor, had started the inspection. There was nobody living in the house at the time.
Davis said he took a photo of his find with his cellphone and said he is happy to get a good story out of the episode.

Seems like we hear about similar finds about every year. I hope that if this ever happens to anyone in the profession that they will do the proper thing!

Yeah....nice vacation.......deposit for the grand kids college......pay off the car maybe.

Just kidding of course. Yes, find something like that in a home and get a pat on the back and a good story.

Now if you are talking about the duffle bag these folks found on the side of the highway years ago in Florida with a few hundred thousand in older 20s while pulling over to make water or something like that.....hm...what would be the right thing Mr goody two shoes. I will check back after my report for that answer.

When I'm doing vacant properties, and I see what looks like a previous grow room, I'm especially on the lookout for anything stashed above ceilings, in the back of closets, near the attic access, etc.

Just the other day I was inspecting an older property with an attic and unfinished basement - lots of nooks and crannies to put things - that appeared go have previously had a grow operation in the basement, and appeared to have been abandoned unexpectedly by the previous occupants.

I told the buyers that after closing it might be worth their while to go through that house very carefully.

For that matter, I'm seeing a lot of various personal possessions with significant potential value abandoned at REOs - a few months ago a spotted a $1,400 guitar in a nice hard-shell case sitting in a pile of junk in the corner of a basement.

He handed the bag over to a realtor. The story does not give any details about who did the counting, maybe it was the Nova Scotian version of the 3 Stooges. One for Larry, one for Moe, one for Curly, one for Moe.

Anyway, it's a good news story for a change, and it has to be good for this HI Scott Davis's business. 15 minutes of fame and he got a shot of his car with the logo on the national news.

Scott D, you need to talk to your franchise provider about links to your business. That inspector locator page is a dead end.

That $10,000 was chump change ... we all know an inspector here who found something he professed was worth $20,000 ... and stole it, taking it home and giving it to his wife (according to his posts).

I found on or about 50K with 2 flint lock pistols in a box in an attic. The late owner's coin collection. Uncirculated out of circ. coins neatly wrapped. The closest relative-step son. I don't think he even thanked me.
But my standing joke heading into an attic or crawl is all booty belongs to the inspector.
After that time, a saxaphone and a clarinet.
